How is Black history significant in innovation? Resilient change and consistent action: the core elements of innovation are equally the foundations of Black history. To celebrate innovation through the lens of Black History Month requires meaningful reflection beyond the challenges and limitations often highlighted in the Black community. Instead of simply celebrating the achievements of Black pioneers that have gone before us, we also appreciate those currently striving to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
This month we celebrate the huge contributions made by Black people in British society, with an opportunity to understand and appreciate that Black history is British history. From the minds of Black innovators have sprung ideas designed to enrich us all, and one cannot truly examine the history of innovation without acknowledging their contributions.
Through inventions such as coloured PC monitors and traffic lights, to carbon light bulb filaments and refrigerated trucks, the ingenuity of Black people is evident. Such facts challenge often unthinkingly accepted stories of our societies, how we got here, and the roles that minoritised communities have played in creating meaningful change. Not only does sharing these underpublicised stories provide a much needed perspective into many of the social challenges around the world, but it also has the potential to shine a spotlight on role models for future generations of Black innovators, shaping a pathway for lasting development.
