What is the problem?
Dialysis machines are big and bulky and require users with kidney failure to spend extended periods of time physically attached to them. This is a serious constraint on their mobility and freedom.
Why does the solution contribute to solving this?
A portable, wearable kidney machine would allow individuals greater independence by no longer tying their dialysis to a bulky and immovable machine.
Who is the prize awarded to?
Create a portable dialysis machine that weighs no more than 2kg and takes up less than 2500 cubic centimetres, with autonomy of at least 12 hours.
