What is the problem?
The twin forces of energy transition and physical AI are driving demand for batteries of all shapes, sizes and specs. Batteries draw on some of the world’s most damaging, fragile and contested supply chains, and there are few end-of-life solutions. Dead batteries can rarely be recycled or reused and innovation in other technical parameters is, if anything, exacerbating their linearity.
Why does the solution contribute to solving this?
A deconstructable battery for a humanoid robot would pre-empt the next major mass-produced electronic innovation being founded on another generation of batteries with no end-of-life plan that cause barely mitigated environmental damage, and catalyse design-for-disassembly for a range of mid-size mobile electronics and robotics.
Who is the prize awarded to?
To the creator of a battery that meets the technical requirements to power a humanoid robot and 95% of the component mass is recoverable without pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy.
