What is the problem?
All computers today are electrical – they rely on currents passed through transistors, which generate heat, reducing efficiency, and are limited by the speed at which electrons can travel. Our answer for overcoming this has been massive scale and energy consumption, putting huge pressure on performance, economies and the planet.
Why does the solution contribute to solving this?
It is possible to perform mathematical computations with non-electrical signals, such as light or other waves. If we can develop and scale such chips, we could exponentially increase computing power, especially relative to energy demand, and ameliorate the need for planetary cost to scale with compute.
Who is the prize awarded to?
To the innovator that produces the highest-performing, scalable non-electrical computing chip with radically improved energy efficiency.
