We are searching for topics and funders for the next Longitude Prize. This idea is a draft for discussion about one possible prize focus that we are exploring.
What is the problem? Earth’s orbits are a global commons with no single actor responsible for remediation. The exponential growth of debris creates a collision risk that threatens to render orbits containing critical satellite services unuseuable, yet commercial incentives to invest in removal remain weak. Why does the solution contribute to solving this? There is presently no consensus around the best technical approach to active debris removal for the most threatening debris category (1-10cm). A challenge prize to surface the best solution would provide mission concept around which action, innovation and investment to a generational environment threat could finally be galvanized. Who is the prize awarded to? Awarded to the team that develops an spacecraft that can remove debris fragments between 1cm and 10cm in diameter from Earth orbit. Check out the other ideas
