What is the problem? Decarbonising global building stock requires minimally invasive, highly insulating retrofit solutions, yet current materials like petrochemical foams are toxic, flammable, and carbon-intensive. Biological alternatives such as mycelium, bacterial bio-cements, and bio-polymers that could grow into perfectly fitted, low-carbon insulation remain largely unproven at the scale and reliability required for real-world building applications. Why does the solution contribute to solving this? Developing a validated biological insulation material unlocks a globally scalable, minimally invasive retrofit solution, providing the construction and insurance industries with the safety data needed to move from petrochemical dependency towards low-carbon alternatives. Who is the prize awarded to? Awarded to the team that successfully develops a biological or biochemical material that can be injected, sprayed, or grown directly within an existing building envelope to deliver measurable improvements in energy efficiency.
