What is the problem? Most lab-engineered microbes die in complex natural environments (the 'In-Situ Survival Gap'). Current bioremediation is slow, tackles one pollutant at a time, and struggles to compete with established methods like excavation and thermal treatment. Why does the solution contribute to solving this? A successful ‘Nature IVF’ inoculant would allow us to seed life back into dead zones by providing the biological infrastructure for nature to take over while competing with less sustainable practices and current bioremediation techniques on time, cost and overall effectiveness. Who is the prize awarded to? Awarded to the team that demonstrates an engineered microbe or microbial consortia capable of surviving in non-sterile, wild environments while performing active restoration.
