We are searching for topics and funders for the next Longitude Prize. This idea is a draft for discussion about one possible prize focus that we are exploring.
What is the problem?
In theory quantum computers can do all sorts of amazing things. But nobody has been able to build one that works properly. The main problem is building quantum processors with qubits that remain stable over a period of time. Without dramatically longer coherence times, quantum computers will struggle to run useful jobs that last hours rather than stopping and restarting.
Why does the solution contribute to solving this?
It would set a clear technological goal that is far in advance of what is known to be possible right now. The prize would be particularly valuable because it would set a public benchmark: teams competing to solve it would be publicly graded on a leaderboard, which provides independent validation of their capability.
Who is the prize awarded to?
The main prize might go to the first team to demonstrate operational coherence in a deployed, multi‑qubit quantum processor (100+ qubits, not a single‑qubit lab demo): keeping qubits stable, entangled and high‑fidelity while continuously executing two-qubit entangling gates for one hour, with rigorous proof. Interim prizes could mark milestones – a tenth of a second, ten minutes etc.
The best prize ideas are developed through extensive research and engagement with experts, stakeholders and people with lived experience of the problems they are focused on. We start with a first draft like the one above – then work to improve, refine and validate our thinking.
