What is the problem? Current circular economy approaches often result in 'down-cycling', as multi-layer materials like juice cartons or EV batteries are nearly impossible to separate without extreme heat and toxic solvents. Tools like AlphaFold can predict structures, but cannot yet operate in the chemically complex environments where recycling actually occurs. Why does the solution contribute to solving this? It removes the need for high-heat incineration and toxic chemical solvents, replacing them with low-energy biological processes that work in real-world, complex settings. Who is the prize awarded to? Awarded to the team that develops a cascading enzymatic system that can perform multiple steps for breakdown and recovery without the enzymes negatively interfering with each other.
